New Music: Rojay x Poppa Don x Shukid – ‘OVERTIME’

“Me and my amigos, we all got egos”

Repping the Shrap culture, Rojay enlists Hip Hop heavyweights Poppa Don and Shukid to put together a banger titled ‘OVERTIME.’ With jeraw handling production, Rojay opens up the track and it’s clear “Nairobi’s Son” is on a mission to put all competition, haters and skeptics to bed. The charisma behind his raps allows Rojay to have fun on the track while making a bold statement at the same time.

With bars like,”Kini Big Shot they gon’ label me a Gemini/ Bout’ to blow up like an afro,”Poppa Don needs no introduction or explanation. Shukid’s lyrical abilities are undeniable, but his final line couldn’t have been a better close to the track, “So I guess I’ll see you n****s on the other side/ I hope this city love to see another brother rise.”

Jump Off Freshmen Who Put Out The Best Work In Their Year

Each year Corine picks bubbling under emcees who could potentially blow up and become the next big thing and it’s worked out great seeing as how her Freshman list helped give rise to stars like Khaligraph Jones and Lon Jon.

It’s about to be a whole new season of that and while we wait to see which new cats get onto the list this year, let’s look back at the Freshmen who during their year, put out the most and best work.

(From most recent to earlier Freshman Lists)

5 Shukid.

Came up in a year that had other stars Timmy Tim and Baby T. Shukid worked at putting more thought process into his work and his smart outlook at the hip hop scene has himon hip hop charts across Nairobi.

4 Poppa Don

He may have failed to deliver on his ‘one video a week’ plan but he none the less captured all of our attention with his deep voice, emphatic lyrics and most especially through his emotional Mama single. No doubt he was most visible in a list of rappers that included Smallz Lethal, Cashy and Oksyde.

3 Ace tha Don.

From the same year as Papa Don, Ace juggled school and a music career but yet found a way to bless the airwaves with multiple hit tracks earning him interviews on other shows and definitely making him stand out as one of the top.

He is currently claiming the number one spots on hip hop charts across Nairobi with his ‘Light Work’ single’.

2 Lon Jon.

Versatility could easily be his middle name. Lon Jon has shown us he could witch up the tempo by featuring on jams like ‘Grown and Sexy’ and on the AKA ‘Run Jozi’ sample. Lon Jon has clearly mapped out his long standing rap career spanning years after having been featured on The Jump Off’s Freshman List.

1 Khaligraph Jones.

Seems really odd to even consider that he was once a freshman but he was. This rapper has pretty much cemented his place at the top of the hip hop food chain, churning out hit after hit and outshining every other member of his year.

This year’s Jump Off Freshman submissions are ongoing and for a first time, being done in conjunction with DJ Final Cut and Miss Ruby V’s Hip Hop Culture show. Need details? Check poster.
