Meet Trabolee; A Force To Reckon With In The Game

One of the first MCEE’s to grace our studios for Freestyle Fridays is TRABOLEE, a performing artist who conveys his creativity particularly through the genres of Hip Hop and spoken word poetry.

With three stellar projects under his belt- THC (2013), Occult Lore (2013) and All Roads Lead Home (2015), numerous singles and collaborations as well as participating and winning the Aarban Cypher competition twice, Trabolee has established himself not only as an EMCEE but as an all rounded artist and a force to reckon with.

In a brief interview with the artist, we got to comprehend a lot more.

So who and what does TRABOLEE mean?

Under the pseudonym of TRABOLEE, the encoded meaning is Truth Reigns Above But Only Love Exists Eternally. That’s profound! Please elaborate… Tra is Art that mirrors my innermost reflections when I’m creating. I’ve always been amazed at how the mundane nothingness of life can be transformed into a canvas, especially if one is in tune enough to see the patterns and connections that are always presenting themselves in the now.

Your freestyle was tight by the way. In relation to J. Cole releasing his newest album KOD today, what are your thoughts? Are you a fan?

Yes, I’m a fan. I love the intent of his music, being a pioneer of this new generation he really takes upon himself to direct the conversation of the culture from a vulnerable but pure place. In this age where there’s a deliberate attempt to dumb down content, a middle ground is needed.

As an artist, what are your thoughts on the current Kenyan rap scene?

The Kenyan Rap scene is growing and mainly due to the diversity of the artists and their ability to collaborate. The spirit of unity will definitely be a major ingredient if guys are to elevate.

What do think of avenues like Freestyle Fridays by Homeboyz Radio and the impact they have on the culture?

It’s a valid avenue. It encourages cohesion and a meet up of different caliber of artists so that boundaries are dissolved allowing room for necessary conversation and giving unsung but talented artists a good platform.

Cardi B’s Reign Continues! Check Out Her Bruno Mars Collabo

I read a quote on instagram last year that read…. “May 2018 be as good for you as 2017 was to Cardi B’.

Definitely made for a hilarious new year’s message but isn’t that true?

I mean Cardi B seemed to have come out of nowhere with her ‘Bodak Yellow’ single, capturing all our attention with a long stay at number one with that particular single.

This former reality TV show star had been recording and putting out mix-tapes long before that, but what has been most impressive about her is her continuity.

Unlike other artists to have enjoyed a fast catapult to the top of the industry, (like Korean star Psy with ‘Gangnam Style’), Cardi B has so far managed to clutch onto the top spot, getting featured on Migos’s single ‘Motor Sport’ and releasing three of her own singles, including this Bruno Mars collaboration.

Featuring on this 24K Magic star’s single ‘Finesse’ Cardi B is clearly looking to cement her place as one of this generation’s top rated artist.

As for whether or not Cardi B is doing at good job at that, (at cementing her place in the ‘book of legends’)… we’d say she’s well on her way given this post that Bruno Mars shared on his social media, describing her. It read…

I met cardi B at 3 am after my show in LA backstage where we recorded her verse for Finesse. She walked in the room and she was everything I’d hope she’d be. Never change cardi! Don’t let this crazy music business change who you are. You posses something that can’t be taught. You’re a true star. Thank you for putting your energy and love all over this record and video. I hope you feel better soon because we got some celebrating to do. Everyone show ya love for the one and only CARDI B! 👏👏👏👏 #Finesse

Migos Get Back On #ROTW with ‘Stir Fry’

They have featured on ROTW quite a few times and while it’s their unmistakable rhythm and flow that we know and love them for, the Migos trio definitely push their limits with this Pharrell produced banger.

That’s right. You had me at Pharrell produced.

Migos who are constantly on the entertainment news scene, most recently when Offset decided to ‘make an honest woman out of Cardi B’, worked on ‘Stir Fry’, the jam with iconic lyrics such as …

“I get money, tunnel vision, through my third eye”

And a jam that samples what describe as polyrhythms—bongos, cricket-like whistles, clicking trap hi-hats, and slowed-down snares from another funky jam called ‘Champ’ by Mowhawks.

Well hot on the heels of their last ROTW feature which was Cardi B and Nicki Minaj featured ‘Motor Sport’, here’s Migos’s ‘Stir Fry’.

J Hus Is Back On #ROTW With ‘Bouff Daddy’ Remix

The fact that it was already a ROTW (Record of the Week) should already tell you that it was a certified hit. So imagine how much better this remix is.

J Hus has quite simply cemented his name as one of our generation’s top emcees and from his award winning debut album ‘Common Sense’, came ‘Bouff Daddy’ a jam about this UK rapper’s journey to the top.

‘Bouff’ is actually urban slang for money…. in  case you were wondering.

While the highly acclaimed single (much like the album) was already doing well on charts, it’ll be staying on the airwaves a lot longer now, thanks to this Popcaan featured remix!

Nothing like that island flavor to guarantee massive success with a single, especially at the clubs.

Popcaan whose success in music only got more pronounced after working alongside Drake on their single ‘Controlla’ is also no stranger to ROTW, having featured several times in the past himself and needless to say, his addition to J Hus’s ‘Bouff Daddy’ only makes for an enjoyable three minutes.

This ‘Bouff Daddy’ collaboration was put together by Dre Skull, a Brooklyn based music producer known for creatively connecting the dots between various elements of urban underground music and culture.

Well we have a new ROTW thanks to Dre Skull. Here, have a listen…

A Mixtape AND An ROTW Together! Toast To Jacquees & Dej Loaf

Jacquees is a Cash Money RnB singer and well… who doesn’t know Dej Loaf? I mean… let’s just be honest…see what I did there? No? Here’s a video for reference.

These two artists have a collaborative mix-tape together and can celebrate another achievement which is that of becoming Record of the Week with the single ‘At The Club’.

Taking over from music chart topper Lil Pump, the duo’s single ‘At The Club’ will enjoy heavy week long rotation as the station’s banger of choice and why not?

It’s got a groovy feel and boasts of impeccable music chemistry with Jacquees singing about meeting a girl at the club and Dej Loaf rapping about being a ‘ride or die’ kind of girl.

Their mix-tape is aptly named ‘F**k a Friend-zone’ and in case you haven’t watched it yet, here’s the video to the single ‘At The Club’.

Ty Dolla $ign Becomes ROTW With His ‘Ex’ Single

Ty Dolla $ign has been announced as this year’s Jameson headline act and he is currently this week’s Record of the Week thanks to his YG featured single ‘Ex’

Released as part of his ‘Beach House 3’ project, Ty Dolla $ign teams up with producer Bongo By The Way on this jam which you’ll be hearing quite a bit now that’s it’s taken over as the ROTW.

Ty Dolla’s ‘Beach House 3’ features artists like Jeremiah, Lil Wayne, The Dream and Skrillex and its release came amidst a heated lawsuit against both Ty and YG, filed by a man who claims he suffered major injuries at a 2015 club beating incident at one of this star’s stagings.

Here’s ‘Ex’.

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home, tonight
Bongo By The Way.(ex)

Mixing Henny with the Bombay
F**k it, I done had a long day
I done linked up with my old thing
Right time, but the wrong place
Riding ’round with it on me
Got me thinking about all my old days
I been getting money four ways
R. Kelly, “12 Play” with the foreplay
I know, I be up to no good
Baby, I know, I’m just misunderstood.

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home, tonight
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home tonight.

Ohh, how you living, nigga, how you living? (skrt)
I’m on jet ski’s with naked bitches
Give my last to these naked bitches
Leave your main squeeze for these naked bitches, yeah
That’s how, you know, when it’s all bad
She call me or text, I could call back
But she imagine in her head I’m doing all that
I tell her I’m not, she like, YG, you a thot.

I know, I be up to no good
Baby, I know, I’m just misunderstood.

Yeah, yeah
A hundred times, told her, I was gon’ stop
But it’s kind of hard, when every night them bottles pop
Yeah, yeah
It’s kind of hard, when you’re making your watch
Make all them nines and tens flop

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home, tonight
I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home tonighttt.

Superstars Join The Hilarious ‘For That D*#k’ Challenge

It’s happening.

Every so often, a hilarious social media challenge goes viral so, taking over from the ‘Harlem Shake’, The ‘Trump is Coming’ and the more recent ‘running man’ (which even we at HBR did), is the #ForThatD*#k Challenge.

As its name suggests, this challenge is a series of short videos of people (mostly ladies) showing how far they would go for that d*#k in hilarious freestyles.

That’s right. Might just be what you need to make today an actual hump day. (Get it? Cause it’s actually Wednesday).

This #ForThatD*#k challenge has so far attracted some big names in the industry including Hollywood big shots Issa Rae and Regina Hall who tag teamed on theirs, spotting ridiculous lyrics like;

“I go hard for the d–k
drop my black card for the d–k
scream on my mama for the d–k
re-elect Obama for the d–k”

“I might start a war for the d–k
Kim Jong make ‘em say Un for the d–k
cancel HBO for the d–k
b–ch not no more for the d–k.”

Yeah and if you think that foolery was top notch, wait till you watch Erykah Badu whose video has garnered over a million views on instagram.

Her freestyle included lyrics about fighting hurricanes and flying missiles. Whats more, she went ahead to tag team with comedian Michael Blackson, which made it all the more hilarious and which included a reference to Kevin Hart’s recent infidelity scandal. Check it out;

I aint doin shit for da d–k• Licky Lik for da d–k•. Give up my window seat for da d-k• fuck it I’ll eat meat for da d–k• fight hurricane Maria for da d–k• ride a missile from Korea for da d–k• let him call me a ho FTD• baby daddy number 4 FTD• Buck a bitch in the head FTD• Fuck WOKE. And with that many stars jumping on the #ForThatD*#k challenge, you bet this has now become a viral sensation.

Heck. Even Cardi B who’s Billboard’s current number 1 Top 100 artist dropped some bars and got 4 million views on it!

How far would she go for that d–k? Apparently as far as to sell out her family to the Illuminati. Watch!

This #ForThatD*#k Challenge reportedly started back in April and we managed to find the originator, one ‘Reup Reedy’ whose IG handle is @reupreedy_

From what we found out, the challenge started when she dropped a freestyle earlier in the year and in a recent post, appeared to not like the fact that this fad has only caught on thanks to people who she describes as ‘having more followers than her’.

@reupreedy_ also dropped a video challenging everyone to give her some credit as the challenge’s original creator.

Think you can drop a killer #ForThatD*#k freestyle on this challenge? Well good luck! Here’s the instrumental.

Post Malone Makes a Debut on #ROTW

Post Malone and 21 Savage are the definition of new school rap and with how high their individual singles have been charting, they are definitely worth a closer look.

With a sophomore album underway, Post Malone whose Quavo featured ‘Congratulations’, was a top track at HBR has only just released this single that is said to be the first off of his ‘Beerbongs and Bentleys’ album.

What’s even more interesting, is that Post Malone takes over a week after his collaboration mate Lil Uzi was on #ROTW for his single ‘The Way Life Goes’.

Featuring his iconic hard flow, listen as these two (Post Malone and Lil Uzi Vert) next generation rappers take over as HBR’s top played single which is said to be representative of how his highly anticipated album will sound like.

Exclusive! Steph Kapela Speaks After Label Split Controversy

Arguably one of 2017’s most iconic Jump Off Freshman and Nu Nairobi act, Steph Kapela practically cemented his stay onto the top of the industry with Atwal produced singles like ‘Got The Sauce’.

This young emcee is more than making rounds with radio listeners and avid hip hop fans alike paying careful attention to his steady yet insanely fast growth on the scene and he just granted us his first interview after the shocking rift between himself and long-time studio powerhouse Atwal.

While the news was put out in a somewhat abrasive way, being announced on social media (screenshot below), it was clear that Steph remains calm and positive regarding the rift and describing it as a business disagreement that he has since learnt a great many things from.

Steph’s response to that post was by also by way of social media where he revealed his respect for Atal Music, describing him as someone with a ‘talent and ear for great production and engineering and who continues to set the bar for the Kenyan music industry.’

Steph who quickly rose to fame thanks to his impeccable ability to switch from rapping to singing accorded us a phone interview where we talked music, life, performing and even very reluctantly shed a bit of light on this rift.

On music and working with up and coming artists.

Having only recently come up from the ‘underground’ scene, Steph talked about his deliberate intent on working with ‘numskull’ acts  despite having the ability and artistry to ring in collaborations with huge artists, citing a need for there to be a platform for some of the acts to get some spotlight.

On working with soulful singer Kemunto.

Wendy Kemunto collaborated with Steph on their 4 month old collaboration ‘Only One’ and as revealed by this Jump Off Freshman, the two met at an event where he got to see her sing live, after which they were formally introduced, all of which are details that preceded this jam.

On what his next chapter will look or sound like.

Steph maintained a tight lip over the reasons behind his leaving Atwal music but talked about being excited for working as an independent artist. As he has so far shown an ability to be diverse by doubling in singing and rapping, Steph steered away from defining his sound, choosing instead to say that we can expect him to keep experimenting on different styles.

On leaving Atwal Music and what that taught him.

Though silence on both parties have led to our speculation on it being a wildly personal issue between artist and producer, Steph maintains that he is nothing but proud of the good music the two have made but only remarked at how strenuous the rift is turning out to be, mentioning that it has taken on legal form (like lawyers are involved). Without going into any more details about that, Steph talked about singing to the music label at an early stage of his career advising other artists to always be very attentive to issues that may revolve around contracts and keep from being too hasty to sign any deals.

Since the split, Steph has gone on to feature on one of Kenya’s highest ranking collaborations ‘Kenyan Message’ (Remix) by rap icon Muthoni Drummer Queen and shared a stage with his fellow freshmen at Industry Nite’s ‘Major league’ edition.

New #ROTW: ‘Girlfriend’ by Busta Rhymes ft Tory Lanez & Vybz Kartel

Busta Rhymes is probably one of hip hop’s most mainstream names and takes over Record of the Week with his brand new release which is a collaboration he has done with Canadian based rapper Tory Lanez and Jamaican icon Vybz Kartel.

Having closely revealed Twista for the 1992 Guinness World Record for ‘fastest rapper’, Busta is deserving of all respect given by any adept music listener for the past twenty years or so.

This ‘Break Yo Neck’ emcee was singed to Birdman’s ‘Cash Money Records’ but left the music label, citing creative differences as the main reasons yet maintaining that it there was absolutely no bad blood saying;

“I was there with for two years and the opportunity was a great opportunity at the time, because of the type of deal that was done. For me, with this particular project and all of the sacrifice that went into it — recording the album for five years, I lost Chris Lighty making this album, I lost my father making this album — the sh– I was putting into this album, I’m not compromising my vision for it. So if I feel like if, in the slightest way, we ain’t facilitating everything necessary for the vision to be seen and executed in the way I’m envisioning this sh– for the last five years, let me live and die in my own own inequity.”

Unfortunately for us Busta fans, we still are yet to know about just when that album will drop but if this song is anything to go by, then it definitely is going to be a lot different from what we know and love him for..

Busta has featured (and been featured by) some very notable names in the music industry and he now adds to his list by featuring Tory Lanez and Vybz Kartel in what is now your record of the week, ‘Girlfriend’.

Watch as his fast paced hip hop artist channels in some patois.
