Nicki Minaj’s “Chun-Li” went viral the moment it dropped and now it has officially been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America after moving 500,000 units.
Explaining the origin of the song, Nicki thanked her team and fans for their support captioning “Chun-Li has been certified GOLD. Thank you to everyone for your support got on the mic & made this song up in 5 mins just having fun @ 4 in the morning,” she wrote. “Then took about an hour to put words to the melody. Released it 2 days later. We captured it all on video.”
“Chun-Li,” along with “Barbie Tingz,” was released on April 12, and peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also marked Nicki’s 16th top 10 hit.
Nicki is now gearing up to release her fourth album Queen, which has a new release date of Aug. 10.
Nicki has dated her fair share of celebrities. From Safaree to Meek Mill and supposedly Nas. Over the past few days, she has hinted that Eminem just might be next in line.
Eminem and Nicki dating rumors all began when Nicki posted the lyrics to her bars on YG’s track “Big Bank”.
“Told’em I met Slim Shady / Bagged an Em / Once he go black, he’ll be back again,” she raps on the DJ Mustard-produced track, which also features Big Sean and 2 Chainz.
Fans asked if the two were dating and she replied with a simple “Yes”.
Em joined in on the flirty conversation commenting “Girl you know it’s true”
On Sunday, while performing in Boston, Eminem asked the crowd if they’d want to see him date Nicki. The crowd was excited and Em said “Well, god dammit, me too,” he said. “Nicki, if you get this message, just text me later, we’ll talk about it.”
Nicki caught wind of Em’s comment and suggested they link up for her upcoming album “Queen”.
The two rappers have shown their chemistry in the past, collaborating on “Roman’s Revenge” off Nicki’s 2010 album Pink Friday.
Whether the assumed beef between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B is real, Nicki Minaj only just released a few songs right at the time when Cardi B seems to be enjoying her rise to fame and the success of her album ‘Invasion of Privacy’, and one of those jams has just enjoyed a week’s airplay as Record of the Week (ROTW).
Referring to herself as a worldly popular video game character Chun Li, Nicki Minaj definitely delivers on ‘Chun Li’, talking up her musical success in lyrics that go…
Ayo, look like I’m goin’ for a swim Dunk on ’em, now I’m swingin’ off the rim Bitch ain’t comin’ off the bench While I’m comin’ off the court fully drenched Here, get some haterade, get ya thirst quenched Styled on ’em in this Burberry trench These birds copy every word, every inch But gang gang got the hammer and the wrench (brrr) I pull up in that quarter milli off the lot Oh, now she tryna be friends like I forgot Show off my diamonds like I’m signed by the Roc Ain’t pushin’ out his babies ’til he buy the rock
This track came out almost at the same time as her Beats 1 Radio interview with Zane Lowe who got Nicki to talk about her beef with Cardi B, to which the rapper said;
“The first interview she did, it just hurt me because she looked so aggravated and angry. She just kept saying she didn’t hear it…I was like, What? ….Up until this recent interview she did, I had never seen her show me genuine love in an interview,”
Well Chun Li is clearly Nicki’s statement that she really is back and what’s more, Nicki may have just made history for its music video which is filmed entirely in selfie mode.
I read a quote on instagram last year that read…. “May 2018 be as good for you as 2017 was to Cardi B’.
Definitely made for a hilarious new year’s message but isn’t that true?
I mean Cardi B seemed to have come out of nowhere with her ‘Bodak Yellow’ single, capturing all our attention with a long stay at number one with that particular single.
This former reality TV show star had been recording and putting out mix-tapes long before that, but what has been most impressive about her is her continuity.
Unlike other artists to have enjoyed a fast catapult to the top of the industry, (like Korean star Psy with ‘Gangnam Style’), Cardi B has so far managed to clutch onto the top spot, getting featured on Migos’s single ‘Motor Sport’ and releasing three of her own singles, including this Bruno Mars collaboration.
Featuring on this 24K Magic star’s single ‘Finesse’ Cardi B is clearly looking to cement her place as one of this generation’s top rated artist.
As for whether or not Cardi B is doing at good job at that, (at cementing her place in the ‘book of legends’)… we’d say she’s well on her way given this post that Bruno Mars shared on his social media, describing her. It read…
I met cardi B at 3 am after my show in LA backstage where we recorded her verse for Finesse. She walked in the room and she was everything I’d hope she’d be. Never change cardi! Don’t let this crazy music business change who you are. You posses something that can’t be taught. You’re a true star. Thank you for putting your energy and love all over this record and video. I hope you feel better soon because we got some celebrating to do. Everyone show ya love for the one and only CARDI B! 👏👏👏👏 #Finesse
To be the artist whose single is featured on HBR’s ‘Record of the Week’ means that yours will be the week’s most played single but that it is also the week’s biggest banger!
While this week is the start of another year-full of ROTW’s, here are 3 artists that featured the most on ROTW last year.
Lil Uzi Vert
At only 23 years of age, Lil Uzi Vert (real name Symere Woods) is most known for his iconic line from hit single and former ROTW ‘XO LIF3 Tour’,
‘Push me to the edge, All my friends are dead’
Lil Uzi’s 2017 EP ‘Luv is Rage 2’ had two songs feature on ROTW and later returned to ROTW as a featured artist on Nav’s ROTW single ‘Wanted You’.
His three time stay on ROTW therefore included his own singles ‘XO Life Tour’, ‘The Way Life Goes’ and Nav’s ‘Wanted You Single.
We’ve loved him since his bass heavy single ‘Friendly that features hilarious catchy lyrics like…
Ey, why you don’t grind, you no like money? We spend money like we no like money She love a ugly man making pretty money And I’m a ugly man making sexy money
Well this UK emcee had a great success with his debut album ‘Common Sense’ which features two of the tracks that were on ROTW in 2017, ‘Common Sense’ and ‘Did You See’.
J Hus also had other massive hits come out last year like ‘Spirit’ but it was the Dre Skull & Popcaan featured remix to his earlier track ‘Bouff Daddy’ that rounded his stay at ROTW to three.
Ty Dolla $ign
He was this year’s international act at the Jameson Connect party and when he isn’t producing for major artists like he did the theme track to hit movie Suicide Squad ‘Sucker For Pain’, he is making his own incredible hits like ‘Ex’.
Featured off of his compilation ‘Beach Life 3’, ‘Ex’ was one of three other jams of his that made it onto ROTW, the other two being features his made on singles with Kid Ink (F With U) and Fat Joe/Remy Ma (Money Showers).
Looks like the longest run for any artist to have featured on a ROTW for a whole year has been three times and we now look forward to seeing if this record gets broken in 2018… and more interestingly, by whom.
They have featured on ROTW quite a few times and while it’s their unmistakable rhythm and flow that we know and love them for, the Migos trio definitely push their limits with this Pharrell produced banger.
That’s right. You had me at Pharrell produced.
Migos who are constantly on the entertainment news scene, most recently when Offset decided to ‘make an honest woman out of Cardi B’, worked on ‘Stir Fry’, the jam with iconic lyrics such as …
“I get money, tunnel vision, through my third eye”
And a jam that samples what pitchfork.com describe as polyrhythms—bongos, cricket-like whistles, clicking trap hi-hats, and slowed-down snares from another funky jam called ‘Champ’ by Mowhawks.
Well hot on the heels of their last ROTW feature which was Cardi B and Nicki Minaj featured ‘Motor Sport’, here’s Migos’s ‘Stir Fry’.
Rumours about Nas and Nicki Minaj dating have been going around for a while now, and now it seems like there was some truth in them.
According to E! News, the two have been dating since May! Nicki was at Nas’s 44th Birthday party and the two appeared to be getting Cozy with Nas kissing Nicki.
The two sparked dating rumors when Nicki posted a photo on Instagram of her and the rapper captioning “Only KINGS recognize QUEENS. @sweetchicklife has the best food 👅 congrats @nas 😜,”
This was followed by Nicki appearing on Ellen where she admitted being having sleepovers with Nas. “We have! Yup. I go to (his house)… I just thought him coming to me was too forward. Let me clarify, we didn’t do the…” Nicki told Ellen.
Well, they sure do make a cute couple. Check out pics from Nas’ birthday party below:
Grammy award-winning gospel singer Tasha Cobbs has been receiving more than enough backlash for this “ungodly” collaboration but guess what? She paid no mind to all the critics & she’s “getting ready for overflow” sure as hell bringing Trinidad rapper Onika Tanya Maraj, aka Nicki Minaj with her on the recently released “I’m getting ready” track.
I bet you’re wondering Nicki Minaj gone gospel? Well, here’s what she raps about in the song:
The track is off Tasha’s 4th album: Heart, Passion, Pursuit.
The 8 minute song has sparked the “secular + gospel collabo” debate once again online with some saying that the gospel singer will be fully accountable for the souls lost after listening to Nicki, while others of a different opinion say that it will minister to non Christians.
Some have added that both artistes are being hypocritical and that some of the blessings Nicki is rapping about could as well be from the devil. (Ouch!)
In her defense, Tasha recently told Essence that “I’ve seen the Nicki that is off the stage and that Nicki has a great relationship with God,” “My assignment with this song was for a particular audience. Some [of the listeners] have never experienced God ever and she exposed that audience in her way, to the God that she loves.”
She added,“This is not an assignment that man gave to me. This is an assignment that God gave to me, and He prepared the way for me, as only God could.”
She also said that she has received many testimonies from people who never believed in God till they listened to the collab.
When all is said and done, one thing for sure is that this song will present Tasha Cobbs Leonard to a whole new audience.
You may be wondering, how did this beef even start? When? Why?
You may be surprised that the beef between the two New York rappers is a decade old, starting in 2007. On Nicki’s debut mixtape “Playtime Is Over”, she rapped, “Tell that b*tch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown”, and although Nicki never said who this shot was aimed at, most assume it was Remy Ma, mostly because at the time Remy had released a mixtape depicting herself as a Queen on the cover. Remy felt it was personal, and in response, confronted her at a party later that year.
A year later in 2008, Remy Ma was arrested for attempted murder after shooting a friend in the torso outside a nightclub. She was then charged again while in custody with gang assault and witness tampering, after sending goons to beat up a witness’s boyfriend. The additional charges didn’t help the rapper in convincing the court she was not guilty, and in the end, she was sentenced to 8 years in prison.
As Remy waited out her sentence in Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, Nicki enjoyed as her career began blowing up, with her music making her an almost household name, winning numerous awards and having her albums “Pink Friday” go 3x platinum and “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” go 2x Platinum.
As time went on, it seemed like the beef had cooled down, with Remy stating in a 2011 interview from prison that she “supports Nicki Minaj and her success” but added that she (Remy) would become “a problem” to Nicki as soon as she was out. Even she was in Jail, Remy still managed to get married to her fiancée Papoose INSIDE the courtroom, and was hard at work preparing new material after her release.
On August 1st, 2014 Remy Ma was released from Jail after serving 6 out of the 8 years she was sentenced to. Remy was quick to resume her career where she left off, and wanted to extend an olive branch to her peer, and leave the beef behind. The two then began showing solidarity for one another, with Ma congratulating Nicki for winning BET female rapper 2016, and Nicki sparking rumors of a collab.
Congrats to @NICKIMINAJ for your BET female rapper of the year 2016 award😘
(Things are looking good right? 2017 is where it gets heavy)
Afterwards, while featuring on DJ Mustard’s track, “Don’t Hurt Me”, Nicki gave a reminder that she wasn’t ready to step down from her position as queen of rap:
All these b*tches beggin’ me to pass the baton
All these b*tches tryna fit my crown and my wand
B*tches still my sons, get your sonogram on
Just a nick of time I did the cover of TIME
Gettin’ a million dollars just to stand there and rhyme
Even if you was Curry, b*tch, there’s still a LeBron
But let’s face it, I’m Curry, with rings like LeBron
It’s most probable Remy took this as an insult (I would), firing back on Money Showers” with Fat Joe:
B*tch claiming she the queen, what? Not hardly
Who the f*ck gave you your crown b*tch? Steve Harvey?
Honestly, it seemed like it was over, but now; round 2 is definitely on, and this time, they ain’t playin.
The two rappers continued to exchange minor disses on features, but after a few months of back and forth, on February 25 Remy decided to bring out the big guns. Listen for yourself:
Ether. The legendary track that Nas undoubtedly annihilated JAY-Z on with frightening ease, now had been used by Remy to absolutely disassemble Nicki (like a Barbie doll, get it?). Remy did not hold back whatsoever here, alleging about ghostwriting, Nicki’s botched plastic surgery, stealing bars, clowning her for dating Meek Mill, all sorts of insults against her and her family, and of course, numerous threats to kill her (Metaphorically?). I could go on for ages about Remy’s bars, almost every line in the six minute, fifty-second song is a scathing diss to Nicki. She gave Minaj 48 hours to respond.
After the release of ShETHER, the internet went wild, curious to see what Nicki would respond with and if the allegations brought by Remy were true.
Nicki did respond, although not with a diss track, but rather an Instagram post, mocking the poor sales of Remy Ma’s latest album with Fat Joe, “Plata O Plomo”. This wasn’t enough for people tuned in, a response song was demanded from fans, Nicki had to defend herself, right?
Before Nicki could respond, the bloodthirsty Ma released ANOTHER diss track; cleverly named “Anotha One” (I can almost feel the Déjà vu from the Drake/ Meek Mill beef). At this point, it was obvious Nicki was trying to ignore Remy at this point, she had been lyrically assassinated twice and had yet to respond.
Remy seemed satisfied with her destruction of Nicki, saying in an interview: “The dust has settled, some people don’t get that the dust has settled. But I can understand. It’s kinda hard to see the dust settling when you are in a grave under the dirt.” Ouch.
Nicki didn’t put out a full diss track but took some shots at Ma while guest featuring on a 2 Chainz track “Realize”, accusing Remy’s husband Papoose of ghostwriting shETHER:
I’ve been winning 8 years consistently, at least respect it
Papoose wrote a Ether record
But I broke Aretha record
See this is chess, not checkers
You can not check the checkers
Did Nas clear that “Ether” record?
Nah, but I broke Aretha record
Remy was quick with the response at 2017 Summer Jam, performing shETHER live, while embarrassing pictures of Minaj were displayed behind her.
If Nicki wasn’t taking Remy seriously before, she sure is now. Remy took home the 2017 BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, breaking Nicki’s SEVEN-year streak. To add insult to injury, she used the opportunity to further throw subliminal shade, rapping: “I just wanna say, ‘Y’all b*tches got fat while we starved/Shots in your ass, pads in your bras/Y’all some liars it ain’t no facts in your songs/And yeah that crown is coming back to the Bronx,”
With the beef still ongoing, and plenty more fuel to add to the fire, it doesn’t look like this decade long beef is cooling down anytime soon, as the two New Yorkers fight tooth and nail for the title of ‘Queen of Rap’.
