JSHBR’s Dance Friday Explained!

Earlier this year, I (Rae Kiragu) was given the incredible opportunity to take on a new On-Air time slot that was mid-morning radio! (JSHBR)

Jam Session HBR – abbreviated as JSHBR airs Monday through Friday from 10am to 1pm (EAT)

Granted that leaving my previous slot The Weekend Breakfast (WBWR) proved to not be the easiest (read about my transition here), there was no denying that finally making it onto day-time radio felt like I was receiving a prize.

Whats-more, JSHBR was going to be (and is) an extension of the already successful deejay jam session mix-shows that existed albeit occupying one-hour slots. That meant that not only was I getting a new time slot, but I was also getting five epic co-hosts along with it!

With each day boasting of its own kind of chemistry, sound and general feel, Friday felt most appropriate to play host to a feature I only too enthusiastically created called ‘Dance Friday’.

Why create it? Because what’s a deejay mix-show if not a party!

Its aim? To create and provide a platform where Kenyan dancers, dance crews and choreographers could interact directly with an audience they may not have previously have had access to, while providing our Jam Session family with an enjoyable Live stream feed!

We have so far had the pleasure of hosting a number of dance crews and it became apparent that the dance industry is large and wildly unexploited!

So if you would like to get to know more about the dancers who are creating waves in Kenya…

And the choreographers behind them….

Or perhaps hear from the Kenyan creators of the worldly celebrated and internationally recognized apparel worn by dancers and athletes…

Maybe even get to watch the action for yourselfm via Live Stream, then catch JSHBR every Friday! And oh,… find some WiFi or have your bundles with you!

Ty Dolla $ign Becomes ROTW With His ‘Ex’ Single

Ty Dolla $ign has been announced as this year’s Jameson headline act and he is currently this week’s Record of the Week thanks to his YG featured single ‘Ex’

Released as part of his ‘Beach House 3’ project, Ty Dolla $ign teams up with producer Bongo By The Way on this jam which you’ll be hearing quite a bit now that’s it’s taken over as the ROTW.

Ty Dolla’s ‘Beach House 3’ features artists like Jeremiah, Lil Wayne, The Dream and Skrillex and its release came amidst a heated lawsuit against both Ty and YG, filed by a man who claims he suffered major injuries at a 2015 club beating incident at one of this star’s stagings.

Here’s ‘Ex’.

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home, tonight
Bongo By The Way.(ex)

Mixing Henny with the Bombay
F**k it, I done had a long day
I done linked up with my old thing
Right time, but the wrong place
Riding ’round with it on me
Got me thinking about all my old days
I been getting money four ways
R. Kelly, “12 Play” with the foreplay
I know, I be up to no good
Baby, I know, I’m just misunderstood.

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home, tonight
I just text my main chick
I told her, I ain’t coming home tonight.

Ohh, how you living, nigga, how you living? (skrt)
I’m on jet ski’s with naked bitches
Give my last to these naked bitches
Leave your main squeeze for these naked bitches, yeah
That’s how, you know, when it’s all bad
She call me or text, I could call back
But she imagine in her head I’m doing all that
I tell her I’m not, she like, YG, you a thot.

I know, I be up to no good
Baby, I know, I’m just misunderstood.

Yeah, yeah
A hundred times, told her, I was gon’ stop
But it’s kind of hard, when every night them bottles pop
Yeah, yeah
It’s kind of hard, when you’re making your watch
Make all them nines and tens flop

I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home
I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home, tonight
I just text my main chick
I told her I ain’t coming home tonighttt.

‘Lean On’ Producer DJ Snake Is In The Country! (Pic)

DJ Snake has given us countless hits including 2013 release ‘Turn Down For What‘ featuring Lil Jon and this French star is currently on Kenyan soil.

If his instagram account is anything to go by, DJ Snake jetted into Africa and posted this serene photo of him sited in what appears to be open Savannah-like grounds which could be anywhere from the Maasai Mara to the Tsavo, with his location text reading ‘Kenya’.

Screen Shot 2017-09-25 at 21.29.41

DJ Snake famously collaborated with dance music trio Major Lazer on the world wide banger ‘Lean On‘ and his 2016 album ‘Encore’ played host to some of music’s biggest tunes to date like Justin Bieber’s ‘Let Me Love You‘, George Maple’s ‘Talk‘ and ‘Bipolar Sunshine’s ‘Middle‘.

Rumor has it that this house music deejay may be in the country to play at the upcoming Earth Dance Festival and while we are yet to confirm how truthful that could be, DJ Snake now joins the list of other famous stars to have come to Kenya recently including ‘Sorry, Not Sorry‘ artist Demi Lovato and Pop music icon Madonna.

Whether for charity, for Earth Dance or just for vacation, DJ Snake is definitely a force to reckon with and he is currently promoting his latest hit ‘A Different Way’ (a collaboration with an artist called Lauv).

This producer even made sure to have it feature in this minute long video of his incredible view of the skyline while out in the wild.

Nairobi Readies To Host World Under 18s

All seems to be going down well with Nairobi’s preparations to host the World under 18 Championships. The event will take place in Nairobi on July 12th to 16th2017.

IAAF delegates are currently on tour in Nairobi to scout the facilities and preparations that are underway, to ensure that the event will turn out to be a success. Carlo De Angeli, who is the Head of Events Operations in IAAF, claimed that he was pleased with the strategies that are being put in place to promote and create awareness, so as to get fans eager about the event.

The Head of Events Operations also stated that he was excited at how the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was pushing to involve the local and county governments in the thick of the action.

There are plans to have a ‘village’ that will house the athletes as they participate in the event, which will foster togetherness amongst them. De Angeli added that the village idea will also promote safety of the athletes. The village is set to be in Kenyatta University

The IAAF committee also lauded the initiative to move the competition from Nyayo Stadium to the much larger Kasarani stadium.

Local Organizing Committee CEO, Mwangi Muthee said that with assistance of input from visits from the IAAF, the preparations were going down well. He added that their visit to Kampala for the Cross Country Championships also served them well.

IAAF president, Seb Coe is pleased and believes things are working out in line with one of his aims to bring major competitions to Africa and other non-traditional venues.

The event which is expected to bring in approximately 2,000 athletes, officials and coaches from 156 different countries will be the one of the largest athletic events this year. The only other event that will probably top it will be the World Championships in London on the 4th to 13th August 2017.

History Made On #GMITM! Watch

Now this is a show that every #GMITM listener will not be forgetting anytime soon, considering how different it was but in case you missed it, not to worry, we covered it all for you.

The man surely needs no introduction (but just for the record) Leighton Walsh aka Walshy Fire co-wrote the Chronixx song “Blaze Up The Fire,” lent his vocals to “Too Original” and along with Diplo, he is one of the members of the chart topping group Major Lazer; who produced Justin Bieber and MO’s hit “Cold Water,” among many more.

He not only did the 10 O’clock news, took over the #GMITM show, let us in on why he is in the country but also dropped,(for the first time) brand new music on Homeboyz Radio’s #GMITM (G-Money In The Morning) show.

Walshy is working on a historical Afro-Caribbean album which he says is geared towards “promoting the cultures to a whole genres of people,” will he be working with any Kenyan on the album?

Among his other projects, while in Africa, the multi-talented producer will also be recording a TV show.

His main agenda in Kenya specifically is:

walshy fire

If he was to describe his works? “Very difficult to put in one word” he says, but if he was to describe it he would say “unifying.”

His live shows are a DJs dream and there is arguably still no match to his craft in Dancehall Emceeing. According to the Jamaican-American DJ and record producer it’s his personality that makes him stand out and win crowds over while emceeing, regardless of the number of times he pulls up a song.

Listen to his latest release “No Laziness” ft. Ketchup and Bunji Garlin below:

His last word of inspiration to anyone working on a project that they believe in is not to give up.

Exclusive! Mi Casa’s Exciting Nairobi Performance From This Weekend

This might be the one year for Nairobi to have seen the most number of international acts to grace its soil from Chris Brown and Trey Songz, to all the African acts converged here for Coke Studio Africa.

South African hit crew Mi Casa have been here before and each time performed before a seemingly insatiable crowd which was the same thing that happened this past weekend.

Filmed by DJ Kafi, (who will be putting up the rest of the exclusive footage up on his own social media) watch as this band perform ‘Tulale Fofofo’.

Trey Songz Caps Off Nairobi Trip With CBD Visit

It was a fitting end to a pretty good trip to Kenya for Trey Songz – who capped his visit with a photo-shoot in the heart of the CBD.

The Coke Studio Africa’s ‘mentor’ took a stroll through the heart of town (almost certainly with some security in tow) – posing at the corner of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Lane, interacting with a few people on the street and giving back in his own special way.

Check out more pics from his Nairobi trip on his Instragram

Coke Studio Africa kicks off on your TV screens from next month!

Lunching At Nairobi’s Gorgeous New Chill Spot – The Arbor

It was 1pm, so why not dash out of the office for a super-lux meal?

That was exactly what Tallia Oyando and I decided to do on a sluggish Tuesday afternoon.  And the location we chose was perfect: in the heart of Lavington just off James Gichuru Road, the Arbor is lush, picturesque and serene.

Arbor 3

It’s primarily a brunch/lunch/ early dinner cafe – open from 10am to around 5pm and from the inviting cushioned seating area outside, it looks like the kind of place to go to when you want to escape from the stresses of the big city.

The menu was simple yet complex – by this I mean The Arbor is not trying to drown you with 500 different options but we were still salivating over the choices.

I live and die for pesto, so I went for a massive chicken – pesto sandwich with a side of chips, while Tallia had an absolutely heavenly bowl of pasta with chicken and bacon. The meals were so filling, and so obviously lovingly prepared, that we had no problem dipping into each other’s meals (she’s usually quite mean, so THANK YOU Arbor, for changing her!)

Arbor 2 Arbor 4

The meals took around 15 minutes to get to the table, but we didn’t even notice the time fly because there was so much to discover within the grounds. Locally crafted jewels, clothes and furniture within a mini ‘market’. Food AND shopping at the same damn time? Hell yes.

Arbor 5 Arbor 6

Once the food came, we ordered drinks – sangria for her, and for myself, a mojito that actually tasted like a mojito should! There are also plenty of options for those who may not want to choose an alcoholic drink.

So many fabulous new café/restaurants have been springing up across Nairobi in recent months spurred by our ever growing love for great food.

The Arbor is a gem that you really should make a point of trying out!
