Legends Never Die : 7 Of Avicii’s Biggest Singles

He was one of EDM’s most praised and most loved deejay and producer so it makes sense that the world now mourns the untimely passing of Tim Bergling aka Avicii.

The 28 year old passed away this past week (Friday) in Oman and the world received the news via one of his representatives who did not disclose any cause of death and only asked that we respect the star’s family’s privacy.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

Avicii made his big break onto the world wide scene close to a decade ago, rising to ‘superstardom’ in the years that followed, even appearing a few times in Forbes Magazine’s list of highly acclaimed deejays.

Most known for notable hits such as ‘Wake Me Up’ and ‘Hey Brother’, here are 7 songs by Avicii that prove that he’ll be living on through his music.

Wake Me Up

Released as part of Avicii’s 2013 album ‘True’, this jam quickly became a hit, charting at no. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100, going platinum six times.

Levels

With over three hundred million views on YouTube, ‘Levels’ was Avicii’s breakout hit that showcased his musical prowess by his use of soul music icon Etta Jame’s vocals from her hit single ‘Something’s Got a Hold On Me’. The video featured dance theatrics that included a man in a suit who couldn’t seem to stop himself from dancing and who is seen scribbling the name Avicii in the earlier parts of the video.

I Could Be The One

Released in 2012, this Avicii single was a collaboration with Dutch deejay Nicki Romero and featured one of his most iconic music videos that embodied the message of ‘being truly free’. In the video, we follow the life of a middle aged woman, living a painfully monotonous life, until she wakes up in her dream life. It’s currently enjoying over two hundred million views on YouTube.

Hey Brother

From the same album as ‘Wake Me Up’, Avicii continues to show his musical ability to turn any genre into dance, by collaborating with country artist Dan Tyminski to create this country-edm jam that got radio success and earned over one million likes on YouTube.

Waiting For Love

Working alongside other EDM deejay, Martin Garrix, Avicii created yet another timeless hit with ‘Waiting For Love’ which like most of his other singles was a definite sing along!

The Nights

Probably one of Avicii’s most prolific songs to live on, ‘The Nights’ was co-written with American singer Nicholas Furlong and preaches the message of escapism and always striving to live our best life.

Friend of Mine

By now it’s clear that Avicii loved to make music that held within it, an impactful life message. ‘Friend of Mine’ is a single off of his last released EP ‘Avicii’, and speaks of the value of friendship with a music video that even features an awareness call to Alzheimer’s .

Avicii’s untimely death caught the whole world by surprise but as is evident from those jams, it’s clear that he’ll be living on through his music.

So what was YOUR favourite Avicii single?

‘Lean On’ Producer DJ Snake Is In The Country! (Pic)

DJ Snake has given us countless hits including 2013 release ‘Turn Down For What‘ featuring Lil Jon and this French star is currently on Kenyan soil.

If his instagram account is anything to go by, DJ Snake jetted into Africa and posted this serene photo of him sited in what appears to be open Savannah-like grounds which could be anywhere from the Maasai Mara to the Tsavo, with his location text reading ‘Kenya’.

DJ Snake famously collaborated with dance music trio Major Lazer on the world wide banger ‘Lean On‘ and his 2016 album ‘Encore’ played host to some of music’s biggest tunes to date like Justin Bieber’s ‘Let Me Love You‘, George Maple’s ‘Talk‘ and ‘Bipolar Sunshine’s ‘Middle‘.

Rumor has it that this house music deejay may be in the country to play at the upcoming Earth Dance Festival and while we are yet to confirm how truthful that could be, DJ Snake now joins the list of other famous stars to have come to Kenya recently including ‘Sorry, Not Sorry‘ artist Demi Lovato and Pop music icon Madonna.

Whether for charity, for Earth Dance or just for vacation, DJ Snake is definitely a force to reckon with and he is currently promoting his latest hit ‘A Different Way’ (a collaboration with an artist called Lauv).

This producer even made sure to have it feature in this minute long video of his incredible view of the skyline while out in the wild.

Major Lazer – Know No Better EP Review

(Written By Hondo Kanhema)

It has been 2 weeks exactly since the release of Major Lazers surprise EP, ‘Know No Better’ was dropped seemingly out of nowhere onto Youtube, Spotify, and Google Music on June 1st.

The project brings together artists from all over the globe, featuring African, Brazilian, Hispanic and Caribbean artists who all interestingly add their own element of culture from all corners of the globe, to the 19 minute mixtape.

The small 6 song EP was released alongside the much anticipated single with the same name, ‘Know no Better’ featuring Travis Scott, Camila Cabello and Quavo. The collaboration of these artists alone was enough to generate hype about the track.

  1. Know No Better (feat. Camila Cabello, Travis Scott & Quavo)
  2. Buscando Huellas (feat. Sean Paul & J Balvin)
  3. Particula (feat. Patoranking, Jidenna, Nasty C & Ice Prince)
  4. Jump (feat. Busy Signal)
  5. Sua Cara (feat. Pabllo Vittar & Anitta)
  6. Front of the Line (feat. Machel Montano & Konshens)

The first track off the EP ‘Know no Better (ft. Travis Stott, Camilla Cabello, Quavo), begins the project with as short, soft piano introduction before evolving into the upbeat, feel good music, that we’ve come to expect from the electronic music trio, Major Lazer. It becomes evident that music group is able to consistently deliver hot tracks to listeners worldwide, constantly staying on the charts. The song feels like it would be a definite summer hit, with Travis Scott and Camila Cabello making a refreshing combination on the chorus and Quavo slinking away from his own group, Migos, once again to deliver an excellent verse.

The second song on the project “Buscando Huellas” (ft. J Balvine & Sean Paul) has heavy Spanish as well as Caribbean Influences, evidenced by J Balvine delivering his lines entirely in Spanish, the reggae-ton style beat as well as Sean Paul’s Jamaican reggae style of rap. Although I didn’t get too much of a lasting impression from the song, lovers of Spanish rap and Sean Paul will certainly enjoy the collab between the two reggae-ton artists.

The third song on the EP, “Particula” (ft. Nasty C, Ice Prince, Patoranking, and Jidenna) was one of my favorite on the entire album, as it was able to capture the African vibe, by having a mostly African feature list. The combined production featuring an Afro beat by South African producer, DJ Maphorisa and Major Lazer, combined with the vocals of Jidenna, Nasty C and Patoranking creates a song that just makes you want to dance your worries away.

maxresdefault  Jump

Jump. This song did not disappoint whatsoever in my opinion. Another favorite of mine, this song literally entices you to jump with each beat of the bass, I can guarantee this song is a definite club banger with its fast paced drums, and its intense drop with more bass than you could shake a stick at. Elements of house and reggae are expertly mashed together in this tracks, albeit repetitively, it never sounds like either genre dominates the other. In case you were wondering, Busy signal is able to say ‘Jump’, 44 times (yes I counted) in the short span of three minutes.

maxresdefault (1)  Sua Cara

Sua Cara (ft. Anitta & Pabllo Vittar) is sung entirely in Portuguese, as it features Brazilian singers Anitta & Pabllo Vittar. Although I couldn’t understand a single word in the song, it was still quite enjoyable, being more oriented towards Pop and singing vocals, compared to the rest of the EP. It’s the shortest song on the EP, but still a groovy track (does anyone even say groovy anymore?).

hq720  Front of the line

A dancehall/EDM mix that captures both genres, and somehow mashes them together rather smoothly. An even balance of each genre, Konshens and Machel Montano both flow smoothly on the beat while still retaining a great deal of power and energy. The pair are even mistakable for one another while singing on the chorus, the Jamaican and Trinidadian artists have definitely made a hit that will be listened to internationally.

Overall, the unexpected EP was one that I enjoyed listening to. It seems like Major Lazer is trying to dominate the summer once again with this release with heavy reggae, pop, and house/EDM influences once again. However, the EP fails to bring any new concepts and ideas to the group’s music, some songs on the project made me feel as if I had already heard them in other Major Lazer songs. Maybe this was done on purpose, as the EP was titled “Know no better”; it feels like Major Lazer, knows no better way to produce their songs. Their music is fun, upbeat and a thrill to dance to, but it’s beginning to feel repetitive at this point.

How Epic Are These Two EDM Remixes To Tetu Shani and Mayonde’s ‘Chemistry’? (Listen)

The EDM culture in Kenya is alive and these two EDM remixes to Tetu Shani and Mayonde’s ‘Chemistry’ are proof of that!

They were the jams on this weekend’s Under Cover feature that plays out exclusively on Weekend Breakfast With Rae, a feature where two renditions to the same song are pitted against each other and the one that garners the most votes is crowned Under Cover winner.

Produced by Kenyan born and raised deejays/ producers DJ Fita and Hendrick, these remixes are the epitome of divine and are definitely worlds apart from the original, which sounds like this.

It was a tough run for both jams that it even became the first Under Cover in Weekend Breakfast History to flow over into the next edition!

Couldn’t tell which one won so to help you prepare to vote with us this weekend on Saturday (6am to 9am), here are both remixes.

HENDRICK Remix

Both of these jams were part of a call out competition where Tetu got deejays to post up their most creative re-makes of the single.

Avicii Announces Retirement from Music Scene

It’s a sad day for music as ‘Wake me up’ deejay Avicii has decided to retire from music.

At only 26 years of age, Avicii wrote a heartfelt message to his fans via his official website saying;

“I’ve become an adult while growing as an artist, I’ve come to know myself better and realize that there’s so much I want to do with my life.”

That’s true. He was only pretty young when he started out within which time he has had considerable success, charting in the Top 5 of DJ Mags Top 100 Djs in the world and being named as world’s highest paid deejay.

In that heartfelt message, Avicii said leaving the scene has been a choice he’s been struggling with but that he’ll keep putting out hits.

He posted;

“I will however never let go of music – I will continue to speak to my fans through it, but I’ve decided this 2016 run will be my last tour and last shows. Let’s make them go out with a bang!”

This decision came after the ‘Hey Brother’ deejay went on a trip across America during which he realized he needed more time for himself and not just for the artist within him.

“I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist.”

Well at least we’ll be able to play his jams on the radio. Avicii has so far released two album, his debut album ‘True’ which had hit singles ‘Wake Me Up’ and ‘You Make Me’

and his sophomore album ‘Stories’ which featured ‘Waiting for love’ and ‘The Nights’.

P Diddy Ecstatic About South African Deejay Black Coffee (Pics)

Black Coffee is getting more and more worldwide recognition as he waits to shut things down at this year’s Coachella.

While that’s supposed to happen in the coming weeks, he performed at the just completed Ultra Festival where he wowed the crowd and one P Diddy who took his excitement to instagram captioning a video of the two;

“The best music at Ultra is here! The world famous @realblackcoffee bringing the Africa vibrations live!”

Diddy and Black Coffee

Yeah the pair met back in 2014 where Black Coffee refereed to Diddy as a ‘mentor’ of his so looks like their friendship continues to grow.

Black Coffee Wiz Khalifa

Black Coffee is clearly a go-to my the music industry big wigs being chosen as one of the select artists whose jams Drake used to kick off his debut Beats Radio show.

Well done!

Rihanna has had considerable success with her album ANTI which saw her break billboard records to become the third top selling artist of all time right below the Beatles and Michael Jackson and is that really a shocker? She has sold millions of copies’ and she does have plenty of hit singles.
