Drake Stuns On ROTW With Star Studded ‘Nice For What’

The world might still be recovering from Cardi B fever but if there’s a particular project that is shining through regardless, it’s Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ single.

‘Nice For What’ dropped complete with a video that enjoys cameos from some of Hollywood’s top women including Olivia Wilde, Yara Shahidi, Zoe Saldana, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and even Blank Panther actress Letitia Wright.

The four minute long single samples from Lauryn Hill’s mega hit ‘Ex Factor’ and is currently enjoying 15 million views on YouTube (as of today).

Just like ‘God’s Plan’, ‘Nice For What’ is also empowering, featuring lyrics like…

You been inside, know you like to lay low
I’ve been peepin’ what you bringin’ to the table
Workin’ hard, girl, everything paid for
First, last phone bill, car note, cable

With your phone out, gotta hit them angles
With your phone out, snappin’ like you Fabo
And you showin’ off, but it’s alright
And you showin’ off, but it’s alright
It’s a short life, yeah

See how many familiar faces you spot in this video.

We Called It! Tinashe’s New Single Now ROTW

Following hot on the heels of her last release, Offset featured ‘No Drama’, Tinashe is now on Record of the Week (ROTW) with her latest release ‘Me So Bad’.

This after we’d listed a number of new singles that we projected to be ROTW this week, seems we were right in choosing this Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana collabo (‘Me So Bad’) as one in the number.

‘Me So Bad’ has an uptempo vibe to it which is very playful and catchy, plus, it dropped with it’s accompanying video which matches the jam’s energy with a bright color palate and sultry visuals.

Released this Easter weekend, ‘Me So Bad’ features lyrics such as …

I know you want my free time
I know that we don’t play that, that, that, that
I’m walking on a thin line
I’m hoping that it break, break, break, break, break
I’m tryna give you FaceTime, yeah
Don’t mean you wanna wait, wait, wait, wait, wait
I wanna better bassline, I wanna better bassline

Here’s the dope video to it.

Vera Sidika’s Pregnancy Was NOT An April Fools Prank

Vera Sidika announced on instagram that she was pregnant, a day before April Fools and most people thought that it must have obviously been a prank.

The famous icon posted an ultrasound picture, captioning it with a long explanation of why she’d been posting old photos, why she’d quit snap chat and why she doesn’t go out anymore.

Vera Sidika’s post read;

Yesterday, I got a call from a media house informing me that they received an anonymous tip, that I was pregnant and asking me to confirm or deny. I refused to comment and they told me that they’ll publish the story in the coming week. I knew they would publish the rumours with or without my confirmation and realized that I can’t hide for too long. I honestly thought I possibly could but it’s hell. Your movements are limited and very difficult especially being a public figure. My doctor makes house calls cause walking into a hospital without being recognized would have been impossible 😩 keeping up with social media has become a myth because my growing tummy will be a topic 😩 so I had to stay off Snapchat, post old photos on IG, To avoid suspicions. I always wanted to have a baby before I hit 30. I’m turning 29 this September and this was the perfect timing. I’m very grateful and the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. But kept it lowkey cause I wanted a stress free journey. Away from paparazzi and nosey people. But we can’t control the media. Somehow they always get to find out and beat us on our own game. So just before you read it from the blogs, this is me confirming, I am pregnant and just can’t wait to have my bundle of joy. I feel so blessed 🙏🤰 Cant wait for my gender reveal/announcement party 🎉😁
P.S; I’ll share videos of my journey so far. This coming week.

Vera Sidika made her debut on the Kenyan music scene as the vixen in P Unit and Collo’s ‘Dendai’ music video, later becoming a well known socialite but eventually building and exploring her entrepreneurial side and making a success off of it.

Congratulations Vera!

The Film That’s All The Rage At This Year’s Nairobi Film Festival

Each Nairobi Festival brings with it a wave of Kenyan productions that later become a must-watch. Since the barrier breaking ‘Nairobi Half Life’, we have had quite a few our 254 productions make it to international screening, with Nairobi Half Life being nominated for an Oscar in the international film category.

While the list of films at this year’s festival is quite long, we have definitely caught the ‘excited to watch’ bug for the movie ‘Supa Modo’.

Starring young actress Stycie Waweru, Supa Modo is an epic film that tells the tear-jerking story of a 9 year old girl and a village that makes one of her biggest dreams come true by working together.

Won’t be giving away too much but it might be a tear-jerker for the more emotional of us but what it definitely is, is a excellent representation of what a perfect society is.

Created by Likarion Wainaina whose film ‘Between the Lines’ became the first Kenyan film to be projected on an iMAX screen, ‘Supa Modo’ enjoyed a world wide debut at the Berlin International Film Festival this February and is now available for us to watch at the ongoing Nairobi Film Festival.

The film is a product of Kenyan film making company One Fine Day films.

Naomi Campbell Headlines ARISE Fashion Week In Lagos (Pics)

Not too long ago, we had a hash tag trending in Kenya that alluded to the mismanagement of modeling talent #PayModelsKe.

Well, while our fashion and modeling industry continues to grow and evolve, the one in Nigeria continues to blaze a path for us to follow only just hosting a massive fashion week, the ARISE fashion week, which even featured iconic model Naomi Campbell.

The star who wears even more hats than just being a model was the event’s headlining act who did not disappoint, if the photos we were able to see online are anything to go by.

Check it out;

Naomi Campbell spent her Easter weekend in Lagos and had quite a blast, even getting to hang out with Nigerian president Buhari.

Miss Kemunto Names And Confronts Her Rapists On Social Media

Easter may have been a great time for most people but for singer Miss Kemunto, it was not.

The singer best recognized for her work as a back up singer on hit TV show Coke Studio and for her collaboration with Steph Kapella on ‘Only One’, revealed on a series of social media posts, that she’s been raped, even going ahead to tag the perpetrators who happen to be Kenyan Rugby players.

While we are yet to verify the facts, the emotion filled posts received quite the feedback with artists like Phy, Le Band, Swiga and Emma Cheruto taking to Kemunto’s defense posting;

Kemunto explains in vivid detail, the occurrences of that unfortunate night before going ahead to tag the rugby players who from her messages have only responded by way of asking her to take down the story, which she put up on her instagram page as stories.

Here are screenshots of those stories.

Kemunto kept sharing more of her story which gets even more emotional, ending with her revelation of both the perpetrators.

As she follows up her case, we’ll be keeping our prayers with her.

Before this ordeal, Kemunto had been working to create more music and work on enlarging her brand as a musician.

Here’s footage of her session at HBR.

Miss Kemunto or Kemunto Music also featured on episodes of Jamhuri Festival.

Brand New Singles That Could Be ROTW This Week

Every week, we give one jam the honor of enjoying a week’s long heavy airplay on HBR.

Last week the honor was Rich The Kid’s ‘Plug Walk’ but as we are yet to have a ROTW for this week, we thought it best to list a couple of new singles that may just be next in line.

Konshens – ‘Big Belly’ ft Rick Ross & Rvssian)

Though not quite your usual Caribbean flavoured jam, it has been quite some time since we featured a Jamaican artist on ROTW and this single which features Maybach Music mogul Rick Ross, definitely plays into our strengths being that it is a Hip Hop single.

‘Me So Bad’ by Tinashe ft Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana

Following her ‘No Drama’ single featuring Migos super star Offset, Tinashe might be on ROTW with this playful jam ‘Me So Bad’. It’s uptempo which makes for an almost definite banger with the added advantage of featuring HBR staple artists Ty Dolla and F Montana.

‘Love Struck’ by WSTRN, Tiwa Savage and Mr. Eazy.

Wouldn’t be the first time that this UK based RnB crew made it onto ROTW having had their single ‘Textin’ become ROTW. The crew seem to be targeting that spot with their latest release which is a collaboration with West African stars Tiwa Savage and Mr. Eazy.

‘Suicidal’ by Diplo ft Desiigner.

This Major Lazer producer and deejay never disappoints when it comes to producing hit singles and this new one he’s come out with features Trap star Desiigner.

Seems likely to get onto ROTW.

It’s All About The ‘Plug Walk’ By Rich The Kid on ROTW

A week after Swae Lee’s ‘Hurt To Look’ single, we can now enjoy five long days of having Rich The Kid’s ‘Plug Walk’ as ROTW (Record of the Week).

Rich the Kid has a debut album, ‘The World Is Yours’, about to drop, an album we hear is set to feature artists like Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and (as reported by Rap Up, possible collaborations with Kanye West, Migos and Frank Ocean.

It’s from that album that we now have the three minute something single ‘Plug Walk’ which is complete with a music video that samples heavily from hit TV Series ‘Breaking Bad’, in which Rich The Kid plays Heisenberg.

Check it out;

The jam features lyrics such as;You can’t reach me (what?), space coupe like E.T
It’s the plug tryna call me (skrrt, skrrt)
I was up trappin’ early in the morning (plug)
Ooh, on the wave like a du-rag (du-rag)
Pussy nigga callin’ for his boo back (pussy)
Plug walk, Gucci on my shoe racks (Gucci)
Walk up in the house with a rat-a-tat

Swae Lee Holds Fort on ROTW With ‘Hurt To Look’

Tra duo Rae Sremmurd, made up of Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmy,  are preparing the release of their joint album SR3MM, which will be a three disc project featuring each of their respective solo albums.

It’s from Swae Lee’s solo album ‘Swaecation’ that we receive the banger ‘Hurt To Look’ which follows the release of his brother Slim Jxmmy’s ‘Brxnks Truck’ which debuted on HBR officially, on the Wednesday Jam Session #JSHBR.

‘Hurt To Look’ becomes Swae Lee’s added stay on ROTW, having enjoyed being there with French Montana on French’s ‘Unforgettable’ single.

The jam features lyrics like…

can feel the weight of what you say (ooh, ooh)
I had explanations for days (ooh, ooh)
Don’t think you’re the only one that’s sane
It seems like we’re not on the same page
All I do is think when I’m away (away)
Colors burst and all I see are shapes (hey!)
Sun goes away and that’s when I call your name (your name)
She’s here for good, and I’m here to stay

If you haven’t already seen the video, here it is.
