Fourteen media houses will take part in the event with additional teams formed by sports bloggers and freelancers. The events to be contested in Kasarani will include football, tag of war, egg race, sack race and 4x100m relays.
Overall winners, likely to be HBR, stand to pocket Sh75,000 and trophies while runners up and second runners up are in line for Sh50,000 and Sh30,000 rewards respectively. It is the 4th time since 2014 that SJAK is marking the World Sports Journalists Day that is ordinarily celebrated globally on 2nd July.
“Constraints sometimes mean that we don not observe the important day with the rest of the world but when everything is set we mark it. This year has been hectic especially around the dates we ought to have marked it but I’m happy it is going down. Let us all unite and celebrate and network among ourselves.” SJAK president Chris Mbaisi said
Coca Cola are making their maiden support for the event while it is the 3rd season for KCB supporting SJAK in marking the day. Both sponsors will also field teams to compete with participating media houses.
Tournament rules as well as the draw for the highly anticipated event will take place next week. KCB Corporate Communication Manager Peter Mwaura lauded SJAK’s efforts in disseminating sports stories.
“The sports media plays a big role in highlighting achievements of our athletes locally and internationally. We are committed to supporting SJAK in that course and thank them for the good work they have always done.” Mwaura said
Participating media houses include: KBC, Standard Group, Nation Media Group, Royal Media, Radio Africa, Mediamax, Capital, Qwetu Radio, Ghetto Radio, HBR, Lolwe, Ebru TV, Kass, ATG, Bloggers, Freelancers, Coca Cola and KCB.
