  • Natural Hair Tips For Beginners

Written By: Nadia Nguru

  1. Do not believe every youtube video you watch.

If you’re a naturalista in the making, or you find yourself switching between no braids and braids, you tend to watch a lot of “how to” videos for all hair types. Then you ever so hopefully try them out believing that it’ll come out just that way. Here’s the truth sis…it almost never does. So don’t sweat it, trying to wonder why your high puff looks a little low or your curls look more like matted and over-gelled strands. Put the product down, and just try it your way to see what works for you.

  1.  Less means more

There are no amount of words that could stress this enough, When it comes to applying certain gels, butters, soufflé’s etc in your hair. Do remember that sometimes, almost always, less is more! Sometimes the more product you add, the more you’re likely to wind up looking like a wet cat as the sticky substance congeals and leaves your hair feeling/looking appalling.

  1. There’s a high chance your head has more than one curl pattern.

Do not get frustrated and feel defeated just because your hair doesn’t react the same to certain products. A lot of girls have more than just one hair type in their hair, often times you’ll have looser curls in the nape of your hair or perhaps at the dead center.

  1. Finger detangling goes a long way.

This one may seem a little obvious, but sometimes detangling with your fingers works just as well. But that means devoting at least 1-2 hours to your hair to PROPERLY finger detangle it. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time trying to wash it.

  1. Eat right if you REALLY want healthy hair

This small, yet usually overlooked aspect of health determines a lot about your hair. If you want healthy hair it is imperative that you eat right. There are no amount of growth serums, edge-regrowing oils and health-restoring butters you could possibly add to your hair that would do for you as much as eating a healthy diet would.

6. Heat Damage is a real thing

…And it could actually stop your hair from growing. If you find it a little difficult to spot heat damaged hair, it is the little strands of hair that remain completely straight after you wash your hair, unlike the rest of the hair which curls up. There are many false claims that applying things like beer, could potentially bring back the curls. Unfortunately, once the hair strand pattern is altered by the heat, it becomes painfully difficult for the hair strand to continue growing. Thus, cut the heat damage off and continue on your journey to luscious curls.
